Q: I have been trying to create my ideal life by creating a vision in my mind, but my mind goes blank. How can I envision what I really want if I’m not exactly sure of what that is? How do I create a vision?
A: An excellent way to unearth your vision is a vision board. A vision board can be made of paper or an actual corkscrew board. Go through magazines and find the images that you relate to the most. They can be job related; buildings if you are an architect, etc. You can also use work spaces and environments that you relate to. Objects like computers can be used as well. If you want to create your own business, put up a business card with that company and your name on it. Then look for pictures of where you would like to live and other things that inspire you in your personal life. Cut all of these pictures out and put them on your vision board. Keep adding to this board as new goals arise in your life. Look at this board a few times a day and remind yourself what your vision is and how you are moving towards it.
Sounds corny? Not really. Many businesses use vision boards as a way to brainstorm new products and ideas. Every business venture, regardless of the type, starts with a clear vision. Physical reminders of the vision and company mission serve as ways to motivate and organize people and companies to meet their goals.
If you made a vision board and it seems like you are still unsure of whom you may want to work with or what you want to do, think of people in your life, family, friends, and also famous people you admire. Who do you feel you connect with most? What are their qualities? Write this down and see if you notice similarities in their professions and ways of thinking. This may lead you to what areas may be closest to your interests and personality.
